I created a quick little tutorial on how to install WordPress using Fantastico from your web host’s cpanel.
Installing WordPress
You might want to maximize your screen — and of course put on some headphones or turn up your speakers.
These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages.
Tom,
Nice demo! You may want to see if the overall volume level can be increased for future demos.
What application did you use to do the capture? I’ve seen other live motion capture videos but none have ever been that clean and the way the mouse movements are handled is fantastic as well.
Clyde, I used Blueberry Flashback Express Recorder. It only cost me $20. I will try to increase the volume next time, but I was looking at the settings and didn’t see anything. Did you have your volume cranked up all the way?
Another thing I will do is capture only a region of the screen rather than the entire screen. I plan to start doing a lot of little tutorials on WordPress.
I am going to be redoing this tutorial, because I forgot to also do a simultaneous MP3 recording for those who aren’t sitting at their computers. Thanks for the feedback. Do you have any requests for WordPress tutorials?
You’re right on the volume problem. For some reason it sounded okay at home, but not elsewhere. I’ll have to investigate that before making any more.
Nice tutorial but it was rather pigeonholed to your ISP. I simply unzip the archive locally and upload the directory via FTP, then run upgrade.php from my web browser. If I forked over another $5 per month I’d have access to the linux server shell which would let me simply upload the archive (saving tons of time) and unzipping/untarring it remotely.
I’m extremely impressed with quality of your video recorder! I persuaded my workplace to try out TechSmith Camtasia which is also excellent but costs over $300, plus their tech support is rather abysmal. I might buy Blueberry just for fun!
Brian,
Thanks for your comments about the different way of installing WordPress. I haven’t tried it that way. Don’t you also have to install a database first and then set up the wp-config file manually?
The Blueberry Flashback Express Recorder costs $40, but if you donate anything to DonationCoder.com (http://www.donationcoder.com/Specials/index.html), you can get it for 50% off.
The Express version is somewhat limited. The full version allows you to do more on-screen text and other interactive features. I simply wanted voice and screen, nothing more. Personally, I think if people choose to see a screen demo, they prefer hearing voice to go along with it rather than little caption bubbles. But voice has its drawbacks too — it’s hard to increase the pace.
Here’s an excellent review of the different screen recording software packages out there. Blueberry scored very high, and for the price, I think it’s the best tool out there.
The only database configuration required was to create an empty database in MySQL with a username and password. Once I uploaded the unzipped WordPress archive to the FTP site I visited the directory/subdomain just as I would to read my blog in the future (e.g., http://blog.demodulated.com/) and the default WordPress installer walked me through a very short and simple procedure. I entered in the database credentials along with the server address and WordPress did all the dirty work of creating tables.
While transitioning from Blogger I tried many platforms before settling on WordPress. The installation wowed me right from the start and made me comfortable that I was investing in a mature technology whose contributors really listen to the users.
As for Blueberry, I’ll check out that review. I was very impressed to see the cursor animations for mouse wheel scrolling, clicks, and double-clicks. Camtasia doesn’t do all that!
Clyde and others, regarding the volume problem, I determined that it’s your own volume settings. Try this:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio. Click the Volume tab and crank that up to high. Then click the Audio tab, and under the Sound Playback section, click Audio. Crank up the slider to high for each of those. Then try playing the video again. The sound level should be louder.
Brian, have you ever explored Expression Engine? I have a friend who raves about it, but I’ve never really played around with it.
I did try Expression Engine but was turned off by some showstopper which I can’t recall now. I believe it was a limitation of the free version or something along those lines. After Blogger I found no compelling advantages to use payware over freeware.

Some very interesting and insighful thoughts. I like this.
Thanks for the information i’ve been trying to install Wordpress on our web site.
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
Thanks for your blog.Very cool stuff.
Awesome tutorial!
I was staring at my Fantastico WordPress screen, and I could not figure out how to get any farther. So I surfed the web for a while for answers. I finally found your video and you said I should click on “New Installation.” Oh, right… (duh!)
Thanks!
Glad to hear the tutorial helped you.
Thank you SO much for this demo. I am a brand new webmaster, and was completely lost before watching this. Thanks so much!
Eileen, thanks for leaving a comment. There’s another auto-installer that works even better than Fantastico: Simple Scripts. Both are pretty easy, though.
Thanks for the demo very clear and precise for a beginner to blogging like me.
I have a domain name and a blog on blogger, is it easy to transfer the blog to wordpress so that the blog shows up with Wordpress?..I have a business account with Hostgator for hosting all my websites.
Alan, yes, importing from Blogger to WordPress is easy. Just go to Tools > Import and follow the steps. Then log in to your domain registrar and repoint your nameservers to your hostgator host, and it should work.
