I think traveling solo is not such a bad thing because one is more aware of his/her environment and therefore able to reflect better. Your thoughts above are the best example. I also arrived early for the conference and enjoyed beautiful Vienna for three days before the STC conference started (and then I enjoyed your great presentations :-) ).
