I agree with Charles. If you bring everything with you to a camping trip it doesnt offer challenges. If on the other hand you just bring a fishing rod, a knife a tarp and a box of matches (or not if you know how to light a fire from friction) it certainly does and it is incredibly enjoyable and relaxing at the same time.

Camping for me is about practicing skills like how to start a single match fire… how to build stools out of baling wire with a few logs… That kind of stuff.

Weird as it sounds, I actually challenge myself to MacGuyver things around the site rather than sit still. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about sitting still rather than doing something, going somewhere, or improvising something.

Cooking is improvisation all its own. Bringing along the bare ingredients and making cool stuff.

Then again, I haven’t gone in over two years.

Your reunion doesn’t sound much like camping to me- it sounds like renting a cabin in a boondock. Your adventures as a teenagers sound more like real camping! Maybe your title should be “An Epiphany about Why I Hate the Boonies!”
