As a possible solution to your questions, there are projects beginning to come through in the web. Recently launched is a cool sounding idea for a new interactive directory which gives everyone the chance to promote themselves. You don't even have to be a big business to do it.
It allows you to record videos of yourself, your product, your business, your skills, etc. to give it a really personal approach.
Your domain expert of Xml authoring could thus list himself there and get the word out that way.

Anyway, promoting yourself is always an area often overlooked in the personal skills area, where you need gurus to come in and give a 3 day magical solution. But there are no magic solutions, you just have to go out there and physically start doing things yourself.

Sorry, bit of a rant, but cheers and good posting.

I totally agree with your comments, I have recently started up self-employed after being an internal e-Sales expert for an organisation.

I like the idea of a podcast and its something I have not seriously considered, the round table idea is also interesting. I have read and heard many roundtable interviews and generally enjoy them.

I personally practice demonstrating what you know to others, but have the habit of sometimes saying too much. Maybe because I enjoy explaining and coaching people. It’s a balance of getting the point across and displaying the correct amount of knowledge, a skill that takes time to perfect. It’s something I hope my website displays, although I probably still need to streamline the content. But I find it hard not to provide decent explanations to people.
