I've only ever worked at or with one firm where direct contact with the developers, project managers, QA, and other SMEs was the exception rather than the norm. Aside from that one experience, no matter where I've worked -- either as a full timer or a contractor -- the tech writers have been considered part of the development team. I've found that in order to keep on top of changes in a project, you really need constant contact with your SMEs. It doesn't have to be active contact, either. I can't measure how much information I've gleaned just be overhearing two or three people discussing something in a hallway or in earshot of a cubicle. On top of that, being near the SMEs (generally) increases your profile and gets them to take you slightly more seriously. While you're never destined to be "one of them", you're not just going to be "that technical writer." Often, that makes getting information easier. Scott Tom,
