Chilipress.com is a mashup of the web's most visited news sites and portals that encapsulates headlines and story’s abstract of its sources.
News are also sorted in logic groups such as technology, science or business.

There is also a new website that just made its debut offering RSS content aggregation, personalization, and the ability to sign up and post your own content, which is automatically made available via RSS. Check it out at http://www.GetMyScoop.com

Does anyone know of other sites that offer the same service? I am a huge fan of popurls, it provides an overview of eerything that's blowing up on the web and leaves me the option of whether to pursue any topic in detail, but there most be others. Maybe it's because my job involves the internet, but when there's an expectation that you will know everything that's happening online (a true impossibility) every little bit helps.

Brian,

Thanks for the link to the Digg contest. That was really interesting.

Re popurls.com, you can customize some of the settings with the buttons in the upper-right, but only the page color and position of the URLs.

I actually don't subscribe to Digg.com -- I have it as one of my browser's home pages. I agree that this lack of personalization is a limitation of popurls.com. For the most part, I'm not interested in general news, but rather specific categories on these sites.

My only problem with services like this is that you cannot log on to any individual site to retain your preferences. For example, on Slashdot.org I have weighted certain topics to emphasise my interest and minimise uninteresting topics. These preferences tend not to be carried over to aggregators which feature front-page stories as viewed by an anonymous web browser.

Conversely, I don't know if it's a limitation of individual websites or of the RSS standard, but I've yet to see my personalised viewing preferences reflected in feeds. On Digg.com, for example, I've unchecked sports news and thus it does not appear on my front page, but the RSS feed I subscribe to still shows me sports stories.

Regardless, I love the idea of RSS and XML and standardised content streaming. In my opinion, embracing open source and open standards increases my loyalty to a company much more than being spoonfed proprietary interfaces.

For some jaw-dropping examples of fun way to display news content check out the results of Digg's recent API contest. http://digg.com/contest
