It’s interesting to watch the global flow of information in the blogosphere. Tonight I attended a presentation by Char James-Tanny at our Suncoast chapter meeting and heard her tell a story about the Battle of Kruger video she saw from Rhonda Bracey’s blog.
A month ago, I invited technical communicators to post their blogs on the techwriterblogs.com wiki. Someone posted a link to Steve Borsch’s blog, which I added to my feedreader. From Borsch’s blog (Minnesota), I picked out a Lip Dub video he posted and added it to my own blog (Florida).
In a comment Holly Harkness (Atlanta) left on my blog, she linked to the Battle of Kruger video, which her husband had sent her. Rhonda Bracey (Australia) saw the link in the comments and added the video as a new post on her blog. Char James-Tanny (Boston) saw the video on Rhonda’s blog and added it to her presentation, which she gave to the Suncoast chapter in Florida tonight, with no knowledge of the video blogosphere travels. I was sitting there thinking, holy cow, how cool.

Very cool! What you don’t know is that ‘in real life’ Char and I are good friends, so I guess it’s not such a reach… My husband calls it ‘handballing’. But it’s very cool that Char mentioned it at your Florida meeting… ROFL!

Now all these months later, another “how information travels” anecdote vaguely related to this one…
This morning I get an IM from a tech writer in the company I work for on the other side of Australia. He and I don’t work together on any projects, and I’ve only met him twice. His IM to me says that he was listening to a podcast on the bus ride in to work this morning, and that my name was mentioned. On enquiry, the podcast was the joint DMN/Tech Writer Voices one (which I haven’t listened to yet). So there he is, spinning off in to podcast listening land on a bus and he hears the name of someone he’s met who’s working for the same company as him, though on the other side of Australia. Small world.
That is a funny story. In the podcast I mentioned some people I met through either the blog or podcast — you were one of them. It’s great to hear stories of podcast listeners. It helps me better visualize the audience.
