The word 'meme' is actually 30 years old (never would have guessed it). I think that a better definition is the cultural equivalent of a virus (but not necessarily a bad one), though I've heard the gene analogy before. I don't know if blog carnivals reject entrants because of poor quality, though I'd guess that some do. Thankfully none I've been a part of. You can call your own thing whatever you want, of course. Call it a carnival if you like. It doesn't fit my neat little definition of a carnival, but that's okay.
