'Meme' comes from the ancient Greek term 'memetics.' The word 'meme' is actually 30 years old (never would have guessed it). I think that a better definition is the cultural equivalent of a virus (but not necessarily a bad one), though I've heard the gene analogy before.

I don't know if blog carnivals reject entrants because of poor quality, though I'd guess that some do. Thankfully none I've been a part of.

You can call your own thing whatever you want, of course. Call it a carnival if you like. It doesn't fit my neat little definition of a carnival, but that's okay. I'm not the blogging police.

Nooooooo -- I refuse to be an instigator of a meme! How did meme come to be called that anyway? Not much in common with the definition of "the cultural equivalent of a gene."

Do people get rejected from carnivals on the grounds of poor literary quality? Or is it usually just a check to make sure they're appropriate to the topic/audience?

Shannon (of RIMD) actually does call it a blog carnival. I usually refer to it as a meme (obviously without tagging). It doesn't fit either definition perfectly.

I don't know... maybe we should just make up a new word. A "memival."

I've only found one blog carnival from blogcarnival.com that I contribute to (aforementioned Carnival of Family Life; I'm told it's one of the best). Seems like most of them are inactive.

Jordan -- WFMW is at least a little moderated in that the site author "reserves the right to delete links that are inappropriate." She also threatens to delete "empty" links. I've found the blogcarnival.com site to be a little hard to navigate. I wish it organized carnivals by category, not just date.

Is there a bloggy term for things like WFMW if not "blog carnival"? And is the distinction one of degree or kind?

As you stated, WFMW isn't a carnival. A blog carnival would be like the Carnival of Family Life, hosted this week by Be A Good Dad (http://www.beagooddad.com/421/carnival-of-family-life-mothers-day-edition/).

Also note that Mister Linky (no e) doesn't provide actual HTML links, it generates JavaScript links. (Actual blog carnivals usually do provide HTML links.) WFMW isn't moderated; blog carnivals may or may not be. IMO, the best ones are moderated at least a little.

There's an entire website devoted to blog carnivals—blogcarnival.com.
